Dad’s Review of Nintendo DS Lite

I just bought my two (2) oldest kids a Nintendo DS Lite for Christmas. I held off for a long time to make sure they were responsible enough to get their chores done and manage their time between school, activities and the game. Video games can be all consuming which I’ve witnessed first hand years ago in college when a few students flunked out of school playing playstation. The kids are doing quite well with the game consoles, I must say. I think it has something to do with the game choices that we selected for them. We chose to buy games that are thought provoking and have some element of education. Sribble Nauts and Drawn To Life are each fun games that make kids and adults think through moderately challenging scenarios to solve levels. I find that I’m quite eager to chip in and help the kids get through the game level when they get stuck. I have a ball interacting with them on the Nintendo DS Lite. I’m a gadget man and my kids and I give the Nintendo DS a thumbs up.

Intel Application Store for Netbooks

As having a Software Program Manager background, I really wish I had a software applications firm right now. Intel just launched the first software applications store for the netbook. The netbook customer base is now 40 million+ strong and rapidly growing. That is more than enough of a base for developers to have a field day pushing apps directly to consumers via the Intel App Store which is called the Intel AppUp Store. There are currently some cool free apps available for social media, calendaring, personal productivity, games, etc. If you have a netbook, check it out.

Now developers can find out what consumers want and give it to them. I expect to see some really cool kid apps start to pop up for the classmate PC. The Intel App Store is hot off the press and will only improve over time.

Apple Has To Speed Up Their iPhone Upgrade Plans

I saw an awesome smartphone concept by LG that will run three applications at once. It also had 2 video cameras which allow for video conferencing. Paul Otellini, Intel Corporation President, demonstrated the application himself at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas this month. Really an impressive device all running on Intel Inside. This is the only thing I’ve seen that even makes me think twice about giving up my iPhone. I can just imagine communicating with my wife via voice and video while I’m away from home right from my smartphone. How sweet it sounds. The disadvantage is definitely the fewer number of apps available, but Apple can’t count on that forever…the other phones will catch up to that soon. All the app stores need are a few very good useful apps and customers will flock. In today’s smartphone battle, it not just about the hardware as in the hay day of the PC and it is not just about the software as in the hay day of Microsoft, but it is about the platform as a whole. Companies are going to have to get that platform mix right and keep it fresh at a beat rate that keeps the customer satisfied. Apple has to upgrade to a 2 camera platform soon and very soon to avoid an exodus of customers to LG or other similar smartphones with them.

Mirus 8.9” Schoolmate Convertible Touchscreen Netbook Intel Classmate PC, 1GB, 60GB, Windows 7 Starter w/mouse Reviewed

Cool Intel Classmate PC Netbook for kids! I really love this netbook. James Kendrick gave an excellent video interview here James’ Video Review as he got to play with it earlier this year. In his presentation you can see that it combines portability and flexibility. It is a PC, Netbook and Tablet all rolled into one and the handle on it is great for kids. It has great features like touchscreen, hand-writing recognition, pre-loaded with kid software and it has great palm rejection and it auto rotates from landscape to portrait and back. How awesome is that!
